Before driving for Central Taxis, all drivers must have a taxi licence issued by City of Edinburgh Council.
To get this they must have passed "The Knowledge" test which means they know the streets of Edinburgh and aren't relying on sat nav to get you there. In addition to this, all new drivers must have Enhanced Disclosure Scotland with Childcare.
In May 1968, 33 like-minded cabbies got together and formed a member’s co-operative called Central Taxis Ltd. They decided that each member together with all future members would have an equal share in the ownership of the Company.
From this initial fleet of 33 taxis, we have grown to become Edinburgh’s largest taxi company with 400 Hackney cabs in our fleet. Central does not own any vehicles but supplies a booking service to match customer requests to available taxis. We currently have some 1500 business and personal account holders, including some of Scotland’s most prestigious companies and indeed all of Edinburgh’s top hotel groups, all relying on the priority service we deliver.
All our Members pride themselves in being associated with a respected company. In order to maintain our high standards, we operate an Internal Discipline procedure as well as a driver dress code. We are also the only taxi company in Edinburgh with a dedicated Customer Service Department.
We were the first taxi company in Scotland to be awarded with the Investors in People accreditation and are proud to say we have been successful in retaining this status to date.
